Why Non-GMO Matters to Us

When Kara started building the Homestead Whittington Farm store, the guiding question wasn't "what sells?" — it was "what would we actually put in our own kitchen?"

The products we stock aren't chosen by algorithm or margin. They're chosen because they're made with real ingredients, without genetically modified organisms, and without the shortcuts that have become standard in commercial food production.

Non-GMO matters to us for the same reason we raise our chickens on pasture instead of in confinement: how food is produced affects what it does to your body. If we wouldn't use it ourselves, we don't stock it.

What Non-GMO Actually Means

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are plants or animals that have been genetically engineered in ways that can't occur through natural breeding. The most common GMO crops in the U.S. include corn, soy, canola, and sugar beets — which happen to be ingredients in a large percentage of processed and packaged foods.

Non-GMO means those modifications haven't been introduced. The product was made without genetically engineered ingredients.

For processed and packaged foods, look for Non-GMO Project Verified certification as a reliable third-party signal. For whole foods — produce, meat, eggs — the sourcing matters more than a label.
