Your Guide to Pasture-Raised Chicken in Mississippi

Homestead Whittington Farm raises pasture-raised, antibiotic-free, non-GMO chicken in Brookhaven, MS. Learn what pasture-raised really means and why it matters — then pre-order your chickens directly from the farm.

What Does "Pasture-Raised" Actually Mean?

The term gets used loosely. Walk through any grocery store and you'll see "free-range," "cage-free," "all-natural," and "pasture-raised" labels all competing for your attention. Most of them mean far less than they sound.

Pasture-raised has a specific meaning: the chickens spend their days outside on real pasture, with access to grass, insects, and sunlight. They're not crowded into a barn with a small outdoor door most of them never reach. They live the way chickens are supposed to live.

At Homestead Whittington Farm, pasture-raised isn't a marketing term — it's the only way we raise chickens.

How We Raise Our Chickens

Our chickens are raised on the Whittington Farm's 40 acres of Mississippi pasture. Here's what that means in practice:

No antibiotics, ever. We don't use antibiotics to compensate for crowded, stressful conditions. Our chickens don't need them because they're raised in an environment that supports their health naturally.

Non-GMO feed. When chickens need supplemental feed beyond what they forage, we use non-GMO grain. No corn syrup, no byproducts, no fillers.

Real outdoor access. Our chickens rotate through the pasture. They eat grass, scratch for bugs, and move around freely. This is what gives pasture-raised chicken its distinct flavor and nutritional profile.

Small batches. We raise chickens in small batches rather than maximizing for volume. This keeps quality consistent and keeps the process manageable without shortcuts.

Why It Matters for Your Health

The difference between pasture-raised and conventionally raised chicken isn't just ethical — it's nutritional.

Studies have shown that pasture-raised poultry tends to have:

- Higher omega-3 fatty acid content. Chickens that forage on grass and insects absorb more omega-3s, which transfer to the meat and eggs.
- Better omega-6 to omega-3 ratio. The typical American diet is already heavy on omega-6s. Pasture-raised chicken helps balance this ratio rather than compounding it.
- More vitamins. Particularly vitamin E and vitamin A, which correlate with outdoor living and varied diet.
- Less total fat. Chickens that move around more develop leaner muscle. Less sedentary living means less fat accumulation.

Beyond the numbers, there's a simpler truth: food raised well tastes better. Pasture-raised chicken has more flavor. The texture is different. If you've only eaten supermarket chicken, the first time you cook a properly raised bird is genuinely surprising.

The Mississippi Context

Mississippi isn't known as a destination for premium, locally sourced food — but that's changing. There's a generation of farmers in the state who are choosing quality over volume, direct relationships over commodity markets, and sustainable practices over industrial shortcuts.

Homestead Whittington Farm in Brookhaven is part of that shift. We're raising chickens the way chickens should be raised, and we're selling directly to families who want to know exactly where their food comes from.

If you're in the Brookhaven, Jackson, McComb, or surrounding Lincoln County area, you have direct access to pasture-raised chicken from a farm you can actually visit.

How Pre-Orders Work

We raise chickens in seasonal batches. Pre-ordering lets you reserve your chickens before the batch is complete, ensuring you get what you need before we sell out.

The pre-order process:
1. Submit a pre-order request with your preferred quantity and weight range
2. We confirm availability and timing
3. You pick up from the farm or arrange local delivery
4. You pay when you pick up — no upfront payment required

Our chickens typically range from 4–6 lbs dressed weight. We'll work with you on the quantity that fits your family.
